Tom Poultney - Documentary part 2- Finished

My idea is to talk about my boyfriend Joshua.
He has gone through more than a 20 year old should.

  • As a baby he was in an incubator because his mother was an alcoholic who drank up until her labour with him.
  • As a child he suffered from many things such as Autism, Nervous break downs and weak immune system.
  • His earliest memories of not being ill in his child hood is running around hospital with just a shirt on at 6 years old.
  • At 16/17 he started college. he started in cookery at 17 and graduated with merits at 20.
  • The same day he left college he had a phone call from Leeds Met Headingly campus offering him a job as a chef.
  • Hes taken on many responsibilities such as being the main bread winner in his fathers house hold.
  • After spending the first 16 years of his life unwell at 20 he is making it back up by spending all the time he can being a child.
So after a week of deciding this is what I'd do, My partner decided he wasn't up to doing it.
So My new idea is 'Leeds 2011'
I want to photograph my area of Pudsey which is slightly well awful, dirty and looks ignored by the council and compare it to the nicer parts such as The estate know ironically as the "Toffs".
Where I live known as "Waterloo Road" Is all ex-council, with a grotty pub next to it were there are constant fights and 2 murders, then the toffs estate is known for people with nice cars are homes and they're most targeted by burglars

I want my images to be of:

  • How the council treat one area to another.
  • the people who are in these areas.
  • show the areas in their true colours.

Task 2 & 3.
Pudsey.

From these three images at first reaction it makes people in my area look like alcoholics with the pub and the beer cans scattered about.

If you look closely at this image and the one before it, you can see the bench and the actual seat area of the bench is a little further up from it.

These pictures are all taken up and down Waterloo road in my little town of Pudsey
With these images i tried to under expose them on a dull wet day to bring out the look of the awful weather, I also decided to do them early on a Sunday morning so I could show the morning after the night before.
What worked best about these images was that I showed the area as intended which was dull, unkempt and dirty.
I enjoyed this shoot because I could find 101 things to photograph that would show what i was aiming for but i didn't like how some of my images turned out because they looked a bit too like snap shots.

Bramham.

I took these all over the small quiet village of Bramham.
With the Bramham pictures i used a high shutter to over expose them slightly to create a lighter sky and happier feel the the images because they look lighter and less because the weather was awful.

I think this shoot could of gone better if I'd of had more of a variety of images and probably if I'd of had a tri-pod for some of the images. but what i liked about the shoot was the images all turned out nice because i did what I intended which was to show Bramham looking nicer than Waterloo.

Task 4:
My idea is to create images of Pudsey and Bramham with similar subjects and merge them together in almost a panorama image, To show that there aren't many differences about different parts of Leeds.
I wold prefer to work in black and white but i would also like to try colour.

Task 5:

Final images:

I think that these images are a lot stronger than my previous ones because the flow together in a way that my others didn't just purely because they're similar subjects so they just work better together.

Task 6.

Ways I could present my final images:

Zine (Photo book).
Prints on foam board.
Power point presentation.
Mood Board.
Flip book.
Montage.

I am thinking of maybe doing a giant panorama of my final images with them all put together.
not certain how it will print but I will find a way.
(Hopefully).

Task 7.

So i tried the panorama.
I like it.
But it don't...
I'm not certain of the different shades in the skies.

Another lay out I tried and didn't like.

I have solved my printing solution, I'm gonna do it as a poster.
But I'm still un-certain about weather or not to use this or the individuals.

After I'd seen my image printed and mounted in front of me i decided I really liked it, The colours worked well and the alignment worked well and generally

I ended up re alining my image from what it is above to this, Also I printed the single Images and mounting them in the same order underneath.

In the end I did one large panorama of my best shots, then made individual shots panorama's of the others.

So all together this is how they are.

Apollogies for the awful lay out having some photoshop issues so this is the only way i can show it.

I loved how this image turned out because the panorama as a whole fades in really well to each other, like the car (going from the left) fades into part of the building of the red lion pub then the colour spotting on the sign for the red lion looked really nice because it stands out and draws the eye into the image. What i also though worked well was the last two shots fade into each other in a liquified form, taking the eye down the shot of down wards road.
If i could change anything firstly i would give my self a steady hand for mounting because my hand was slightly shaky i don't think the mounting went as well as it could of i think it looked really jagged and unkempt, but also i would want the image to be bigger but the only way i could do that would of meant compromising the quality of the image.
What I liked best was I managed to stick to my goal of showing leeds as I view it.
The good and the bad but the reason they're all merged is cos you have to figure them out yourself, because I'm a large believer in each to their own so my bad and good can be different to other peoples.
