Project Gas Mask.
My idea for my work is called project gas mask which is something I started myself out of college.
I am basically wanting to photograph people in modern day life wearing gas masks while doing every day things such as sleeping texting smoking all that lot.
I am wanting them all to be in black and white and I am going to add a Richard Billingham style to it with the direct flash and grainy style.
I got my idea from this from 2 different subjects (Not all of them photography related) the first one was, Zed Nelson's 'Gun Nation'
I liked the idea of photographs just looking completely normal with a really messed up twist that you wouldn't expect to see in there. A lot of Zed Nelson's shots were of people in a studio, I really didn't like the idea of that I felt it would look way too posed, obviously to my shots there are some degree of posing but because of the poses i gave they didn't look like portraits.
My other inspiration for this project wasn't from photography, It came from the band 'My Chemical Romance' and their video 'The Black Parade'
I liked the gothic characteristics of the atmosphere and also I got the idea to bring in the gas mask from this video.
I also got inspired by another Gothic music video by My Chemical Romance, Called 'Helena'.
What I liked best about this music video was how Gothic the scenes were i want to try and keep this Gothic style into my images, I want to use the dark clothes and alternative sets for my images as I think it will help make the images look more blended.
Both subjects together brought up this idea of crazy random people in normal every day situations also, the colours and lighting from both of them looked really old fashioned in a way so i wanted that in mt work to add the old fashioned twists in modern day life.
Here are some random little sketches that I came up with to get poses and ideas for my final images.
Final images.
I'm don't believe this is my strongest image, what i like about it is i've shown modern day life into my old fashioned situation but i don't think it's that strong of an image.
This Image is a quick mock up of me trying to sew a mini book myself.
Evaluation.
Looking at the Books themselves I think they really could of been edited a lot better and looked fairly rushed in my eyes, Also I think that the way my hand made book was put together quite rushed and could of been more neat, I was quite rushed with the whole putting the book together so it didn't look great and really showed on the hand made book. The book that I had printed looked a lot better although was a lot smaller than I was expecting. It was around 5 x 8. (The blog did originally have images of both books but due to the fact that the original post was deleted by accident, and now I cannot re photograph the books as they are not accessible to me). When I look back through the images and research I realized that due to the small time slot i din't get to stick to the similarities in research if i re did these images i would probably try to make the images more alternative than what they are and make them more like the research that i did. When I went and looked around the book fair I noticed there was so many nicer book than mine so I felt quite self conscious about the books, I think if I hadn't rushed both the editing and the making of the books they could have looked a lot better and I think that would have made my images in the fair look more up to the standards. The project as a whole I thought was really low standard because of the lack of quality editing and the book quality and I think that it wasn't as good as what I am capable of.
